Nobody designs a mess. It just evolves.

Four spreadsheets, three inboxes and somebody remembering what happens on a Thursday. We find those processes, understand why they work the way they do, and engineer something better.

A chaotic desk: overlapping spreadsheets, sticky notes everywhere, tangled cables and loose red string
The same desk, ordered: papers squared into stacks, notes in a grid, cables bundled and the red string pulled straight

Sound familiar?

Tick the ones that sound like your week.

Spreadsheets aren’t the enemy. The trouble starts when a process relies on them in ways that are fragile, duplicated or simply too big for them.

The philosophy

Your business shouldn’t have to work around its software.

And your people shouldn’t be the API between your systems.

What we wrangle

Four ways to fix a process.

One question first: what does the business actually need? Sometimes that’s software. Sometimes it’s a better process and a decent API.

A long row of identical forms, each carrying the same red stamp, receding into the distance

If somebody does the same predictable thing every day, a computer should probably be doing some of it.

Remove repetitive manual work so people can spend their time on the parts of the job that need judgement.

  • Approvals
  • Predictable admin
  • Document processing
  • Notifications
  • Scheduled tasks
  • Reporting
  • Data movement

Your people shouldn't be the API between your systems.

Make disconnected systems share information reliably, so people stop copying it from one screen to another.

  • API integration
  • Synchronisation
  • Middleware
  • Cloud services
  • Microsoft 365
  • Legacy to modern

Sometimes the right software simply doesn't exist. So we build it.

Create bespoke applications where existing tools don't meet a justified business need, designed around the way your business actually works.

  • Booking systems
  • Operational portals
  • Internal applications
  • Management systems
  • Specialist tools

Keep what works. Replace what doesn't.

Improve fragile or outdated systems and workflows without throwing away the parts that still serve the business well.

  • Unsupported applications
  • Unreliable integrations
  • Manual document handling
  • Undocumented knowledge
  • Information migration
How we approach modernise work

First we understand the mess.

The full method
  1. Discover

Talk to the people doing the work. Understand inputs, outputs, business rules, pain points, access requirements, dependencies and constraints.

  2. Untangle

Map the actual process. Separate real requirements from historical workarounds. Identify unnecessary steps, duplicate work, failure points and opportunities.

  3. Engineer

Design the simplest appropriate solution. Explain the proposed scope, trade-offs, likely operating costs and success measures. Technology follows the problem.

  4. Deliver

Build, test, introduce the solution and verify agreed outcomes, with a proportionate handover: documentation, ownership, training, monitoring and a clear support arrangement where agreed.

Automate · Founder experience

Automating a recurring payroll document workflow

A SharePoint-triggered cloud pipeline that automated substantial parts of handling, renaming and transferring payroll documents.

Read the case

Before

  1. ZIP archive of payslips arrives
  2. Extract the archive by hand (pain point)
  3. Parse each PDF (pain point)
  4. Rename each file (pain point)
  5. Transform and pass on (pain point)

After

  1. Archive placed in SharePoint
  2. Pipeline extracts, parses, renames and transforms (part of the solution)
  3. Secure onward transfer (part of the solution)
  4. Exceptions surfaced to a person (a person stays in control)

Technology without the religion.

Microsoft, open-source, cloud and bespoke, chosen according to what the problem needs. The recommendation starts with your process, existing systems and commercial constraints.

AI where it helps. Not where it looks fashionable.

AI is useful for some processes. For others, a well-designed workflow and a decent API are more useful. We consider document analysis, extraction, classification, knowledge retrieval and assisted workflows when they offer a practical advantage.

  • Proportionate. Tested against real examples before anyone relies on it.
  • Careful with data. Clear about what information goes where, and why.
  • Human review. People check the outputs that matter. AI isn’t deterministic.

Founder-led

Many businesses don’t have a technology problem so much as a business-process problem that technology can help solve.

The idea Process Wranglers was founded on, by Mike Thorpe.

When you get in touch, you’re talking to the person who’ll be understanding your process and designing the answer.
